The system

What was built

The structure is the work an agency hands over: styles, grids, tables and charts that survive the next round of client changes.

Grid and master pages
A4 with 20 mm margins, a 12-column grid and a 14 pt baseline grid. One master page carries the running footer and automatic page numbers.
Styles, not overrides
Paragraph styles in groups (text, headings, figures, tables, footer), character styles, and a GREP style that keeps amounts such as €2.84bn on one line.
Financial tables
One table style and seven cell styles format every statement. Section rows, totals and tabular figures are styles, so a new year's numbers drop in without retouching.
Charts
Bar charts built from native InDesign objects with object styles. The data for every table sits in an Excel workbook, ready for Data Link.
Numbers that reconcile
The fictional figures add up: net assets in the statement of net assets match the statement of changes and the schedule of investments.
Accessibility built in
Export tags mapped from paragraph styles, alt text on every photo and chart, reading order from an article, bookmarks, document title and language, decorative elements marked as artifacts. A post-export pass adds what InDesign cannot write: table header scope, heading order and the PDF/UA identifier.

Accessibility, verified

Checked in PAC, not just exported as tagged

The PDF was tested with PAC 2026, the free checker by axes4 that applies the Matterhorn Protocol for PDF/UA and the WCAG machine checks.

PAC 2026 results
StandardFailuresResult
PDF/UA-1 (ISO 14289-1)0Passed machine checks
WCAG 2.2 AA0Passed machine checks

PAC checks what a machine can check. Alternative text quality and reading order were reviewed by hand. Both reports show zero warnings.
